Fine lines and wrinkles are often used interchangeably, but there is a difference between the two.
Fine lines and wrinkles are often used interchangeably, but there is a difference between the two. Because these two concerns are different, they also require different treatments. Fine lines often indicate the beginning of the aging process. These lines are usually small, shallow and difficult to see at first. Fine lines are often associated with frequent facial movements over time. Since these lines are so superficial, they respond to treatments much faster and easier than deeper wrinkles.
Wrinkles, on the other hand, form when fine lines aren’t treated quickly enough. If untreated, fine lines will deepen and progress into facial folds. Another difference is that wrinkles often form in different areas on the face and neck, while fine lines usually form around the mouth and eyes. Wrinkles often form where untreated lines were or where the face has gradually lost volume. The nasolabial folds are common deep wrinkles located between the corners of the mouth and the nose.
Fine lines are caused by a combination of repetitive facial movements, skin laxity and the loss of collagen. Together these factors create the perfect environment for lines and folds to become more prominent. As we age, our bodies lose elastin and collagen, which keep our skin hydrated, firm and elastic. With repeated facial expressions over time, it becomes harder and harder for our skin to resort back to an “expressionless” state.
As a result of aging skin, crow’s feet, forehead lines and frown lines all eventually develop. Crow’s feet (also known as laugh lines) are the given name for the lines around the outer corner of your eye. They usually start to develop around the early 30s. Forehead lines can be both horizontal and vertical on the forehead. Frown lines (also known as the 11s), are the lines that form between the eyebrows on the forehead. They can make us look perpetually annoyed. With advancements in cosmetic technology, it is now easier than ever to address these fine lines and wrinkles.
